hello, lovelies!
i've finished gilmore girls season two, and i have some THOUGHTS. some may be controversial, i have no idea. at the time of writing this, my resident gilmore girls expert (lizzy) has yet to get back to me. get your coffee and get cozy.
first of all, so sorry it took me so long to get through this season; i got distracted by a bunch of different things, and when i had free time, i was crocheting or knitting or sewing, and i wanted to give the show my full attention. ANYWAYS!JESS! i don't know if it's my long-standing love of "bad boys" or whatever the fuck his archetype was, but man do i love his character. i don't care if he was a dick or whatever. i see him, i get him. i found his relationship with the other characters to be really interesting, too. it's obvious he was attracted to rory from their first scene together. the way luke parents him is interesting, too. i think that the moments we see of it are realistic: a guy, with almost no experience with raising and caring for a teenager, is just thrown into it. and i think it's commendable that he agreed to take on the task, honestly. teenagers are the worst, especially seventeen year-olds. take it from me, a former seventeen year old.
i don't like dean. maybe it's jared's acting, maybe it's how dean was written. i never did get through season one of supernatural when i tried watching it... so it very well may be jared. but he's just such a bland stale white bread nothing of a character. he's automatically assuming rory will cheat on him or leave him for jess, simply because he feels threatened. i mean, a valid fear, but he doesn't know that. he just dislikes jess for the pure fact of disliking him. like, sorry you're just incompatible with your girlfriend, dude.
richard and emily's dynamic this season was slightly different from the last season, as we saw more of them, and i enjoyed it. richard's stress of being on the brink of losing his job and thus taking out his frustrations out on the one person who's been there for him through everything was an interesting thing to see. i felt sympathetic towards emily whenever richard lashed out at her, but at the same time i was feeling complicated. emily is just a woman who wants to understand her daughter, who she created and gave life to and cared for and raised for seventeen years. i can't fault her for that, but i can fault her for the way at which she goes about trying to understand at times. i liked the scenes where we were shown that lorelai is more similar to her mother than she would like, like the scene where they're both doing their skincare, different rooms and not looking at each other at all, in the exact same way. i reminded me of how, no matter how much i try to change it or how much i hate it, i am scarily similar to the women in my family who came before me. a scene from early in the season, when lorelai goes to her parent's house to talk to emily after emily finds out about lorelai's engagement to max, was really sweet. emily starts out by telling lorelai that she doesn't have the head shape for a veil, and before lorelai leaves, dejected, emily says she could wear a tiara; lorelai laughs at this slightly before emily says, simply, "i wore a tiara". i just thought that scene, so simple and pretty much nothing in the grand scheme of the entire season, was sweet and quite beautiful. an olive branch. i viewed it as emily's way of showing that she and lorelai are more similar that lorelai once thought. i just love emily's character.
richard... richie... dick, my man. he was a bit of an ass this season. now, i get it: watching as your life, the only life you've ever known, implodes right before your eyes so you do the only sound thing you can think of to prevent yourself from getting shrapnel in your face (quitting your job) is terrifying. but taking it out on the people who love you isn't the way. now, i'm not saying i'm guiltless or that i haven't done similar things, but i at least apologized. in my notes i even wrote, "richard don't make me fight you, old man. stop yelling at your wife". i also wrote in my notes that he should just volunteer at green acres or something, and i stand by that. i will say, his remorse for having gotten into a spat with rory and his subsequent apology to her was nice to see. he was so torn up about having fought with her; to him, i feel that he didn't think he had fought with rory, but rather lorelai. in those moments, he felt that he had yelled at his daughter, his little girl. there were a few moments of him apologizing this season, actually. it was good to see a parent admit they were wrong and show it. wonder what that's like. i will say, him saying he always eats half a grapefruit for breakfast... what if lorelai was on SSRIs? don't want the chemicals and components in the grapefruit to fuck with your sertraline, richard. that'd be bad news, richard.
lorelai... lorelai victoria gilmore... i feel so complicated towards you. she has her moments where i think okay maybe i can like her, but then she goes and does shit that make me want to smash my fingers in a car door. i understand being scared when your daughter calls you from the hospital saying that she got into an accident and that someone else was driving, but to then be ready with a pitchfork and torches to hunt down the kid? pot, meet kettle. i will say, i liked her graduation. speaking of, what the hell was seth mcfarlane doing there??? i liked that emily and richard were there, and that rory wasn't. it was important that this moment was between lorelai and her parents, since they didn't really get to experience that the first time around. it was important. i don't have the words to articulate how it was, but i can feel it in my heart that it was.
rory, girl... just break up with dean. it's clear you're not that into him anymore, and that's okay. i'm not a fan of love corners. yes, a love corner, not a triangle. because it's one girl, who's into two boys, and both boys are only into the girl. if it was a true love triangle, it would be rory in love with the both of them, sure, but then one of the boys would be in love with the other boy. that's a triangle. although it could be argued that dean's love for jess could be manifesting as fear that rory will leave him for jess. but i don't think that. i think dean feels his masculinity is being threatened and that jess is encroaching on his territory. teenage boy things, i guess. i just don't relate to rory, i guess. i never really did. i never had boy drama like she does, i wasn't the main character. all we really have in common is the reading thing.
the side characters were more interesting in this season than the last, i will say. paris, especially, now that she's more than just rory's rival. i honestly found her to be a more accurate representation of being a teenager than rory was. also the "mucho mac and cheese" line was hilarious. the pronunciation was so white, and the expressiveness in her voice was perfect. i thought that whole scene with paris, rory, and jess eating dinner together was actually my favourite scene of the season. well, up until dean showed up. if that boy has no haters, then i must be dead. is it a hot take to say that i don't think sookie and jackson should've gotten married so quickly? i'm not sayin it was a shotgun wedding, but they were only together for, what? a year at most? now, i'm not saying they should've done what my parents did and wait six and a half years before getting engaged, but maybe they should've waited another year? i mean, they weren't even living together! like, guys... i'm of the opinion that if you're really serious about wanting to marry someone, you should at least either live together OR have been together for more that ten months. i will say it's different as they're both in their late twenties/early thirties, so maybe things moving faster is the norm. i wouldn't know; i have a friend who got married at nineteen after only being with her husband for less than a year. they hadn't even told each other they loved each other yet. i mean, they're still together and they seem very happy, so... it's also the normal thing to do in their particular faith and church. i forgot where i was going with this. i'm happy for sookie and jackson, i just wish they had been together a little longer and just moved in together instead of jumping head-first into getting married.
well, i think that covers my thoughts and opinions on gilmore girls season two pretty well. i'm excited to see what season three has in store, but i'm also nervous. i don't really care for most of the scenes between lorelai and rory (maybe i just don't like rory...). i love the slow burn between luke and lorelai, but god is it killing me. JUST KISS ALREADY!! i'm glad jess came back to stars hollow, and i'm interested in seeing how the whole things with him, dean, and rory is going to go. i hope someone gets their shit rocked. i'm looking forward to more paris; i love her so much, she's probably my first or second favourite character. i can't decide, it's between her and emily. remember, these are all just my thoughts and opinions! it's okay if you don't agree, that's the joy of everyone being their own person.
until next time!
xoxo
